Sumner commission to consider stadium renovations on Oct. 30

GALLATIN, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Sumner County Commission will consider funding stadium renovations at Sumner County schools in a special called meeting on Monday, Oct. 30.

The commission’s budget committee approved a plan to move $15.5 million from the school system’s reserve fund to pay for the repairs. The education committee approved a similar resolution during a special called meeting last Friday.

Commissioners tried to add the resolution to Monday’s commission meeting but voted 14-9 against the addition after the county attorney suggested it could open the county up to a lawsuit due to lack of public notice.

Commission Chairman Merrol Hyde had previously set a special called meeting for Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. to consider the resolution. The meeting will be held in the commission chambers at the Sumner County Administrative Complex on Belvedere Drive in Gallatin.

Sumner County Schools asked to move the money for renovations after the visitor’s bleachers at Beech High School collapsed the week prior to the first game of the season in August.

A subsequent inspection by structural engineers found the home stands at Beech, visitors stands at Hendersonville High, a portion of the home stands at Portland High’s stadium and a portion of the home stands at White House High’s stadium were unsafe.
