High school football playoffs begin Friday night
Teams begin the drive to a possible state championship in opening round games.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The march to Chattanooga for the BlueCross Bowl state championship begins Friday night for high school football teams across the state.
The first round always provides interesting matchups.
In Class 6A, Region 3-6A champion Riverdale (9-2) started slow but ended up with a 50-13 win over visiting Green Hill (7-3).
The Warriors will host Cookeville, a first-round winner over Siegel.
Touchdown Friday Night
Smyrna 26, Independence 14
Region 5-6A champion Smyrna (7-4) jumped out to a lead over visiting Independence (5-6) and held on for the win. The win was the seventh straight for the Bulldogs.
Smyrna will host Ravenwood, a 28-14 winner over Stewarts Creek, in Week 2.
Pearl-Cohn 42, Lexington 2
Class 4A top-ranked Pearl-Cohn began its drive to return to the BlueCross Bowl against visiting Lexington.
The Firebirds (11-0), the Class 4A runner-up in 2022, jumped out to a big lead and defeated the Tigers.
Pearl-Cohn hosts Station Camp, which finished third in the region behind the Firebirds, in the second round. Station Camp upset South Gibson 24-20 in the first round.
