Nashville’s traffic congestion ranks among worst worldwide, report says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - If you feel like traffic in Nashville is bad, you’re not wrong, according to a report that listed Music City’s traffic congestion among the worst worldwide.

The INRIX’s 2024 Traffic Scorecard Report ranks Nashville’s traffic congestion as the 27th-worst worldwide. The No. 1 spot was occupied by Istanbul, Turkey, with New York City coming in at No. 2.

The report states that Nashville was also the 11th worst-ranked city for traffic congestion in the U.S. In Nashville, the scorecard shares that drivers lost about 63 hours in congestion with a cost of congestion per driver at $1,128.

If you feel like traffic in Nashville is bad, you’re not wrong, according to a report that listed Music City’s traffic congestion among the worst worldwide.

Below are some other statistics shared regarding Nashville’s congestion issue:

  • Peak speed in 2024 during the worst portion of the morning and afternoon commute: 29 mph
  • Off-peak speeds during the low point between the morning and afternoon commute time periods: 48 mph
  • Last mile speeds into downtown Nashville during the morning commute: 19 mph

“Cities are likely to experience continued growth in trips in 2025, barring economic, political, or social outcomes. Cities are likely to be handling many more commuters in new modes, on different days, and at different times than in years past. Utilizing the latest technology in traffic, safety, and incident planning can help Departments of Transportation to manage the road network to improve the quality of life in their city,” the report said.
