Man arrested in connection to deadly interstate crash in Nashville
The man was at a party with the woman who would later die in the crash.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Metro Nashville Police Department arrested and charged a man with vehicular homicide after a deadly crash on Interstate 24 in July.
Police arrested 24-year-old Tareeq Harris on Aug. 29. Harris was accused of vehicular homicide with intoxication according to an arrest report.
On Sunday morning, July 7, just after 2:30 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle crash near Briley Parkway exit three to I24 West.
When officers arrived on the scene, Harris was identified as the driver. Police found an open tequila bottle they also said they could smell marijuana coming from the car.
Police said Harris was driving at a high rate of speed when he tried to exit onto Briley Parkway East and lost control of the car.
Harris’ passenger, Olivia Taylor was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital as a result of the motor vehicle crash. She died at the hospital.
Harris was also severely injured at the time of the crash so no field sobriety tests could be conducted, police said.
According to Taylor’s mom, she received several notifications from her phone that she was going at speeds of 115 miles per hour, the report said.
Police spoke with the owner of the car Sadasja Lester. Lester told police she was celebrating a birthday with both Taylor and Harris at a place in Smyrna. She said she saw both Harris and Taylor consuming alcohol. She said she gave Taylor her keys after watching her consume alcohol, the report said.
Harris was charged with vehicular homicide and booked on a $54,000 bond. Lester was arrested on October 31 and charged with facilitation of vehicular homicide for letting them operate a vehicle while intoxicated.
