NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A 13-year-old girl continues to fight for her life after Metro Police say she was shot at an apartment complex in South Nashville Thursday.

People who live in the area around Tony Sudekum Apartments are frustrated with the violence.

“When is enough is enough,” community activist Sterling Wright asked. “It’s sad the kids can’t even play in their own front yard, back yard, park or nowhere.”

Investigators say leading up to the gunfire, a fight broke out between multiple people and that’s when one of the suspects involved allegedly fired a gun into a crowd of people, striking the teenage girl in the lower back.

She had to have surgery at Vanderbilt and is expected to survive.

Detectives identified Steven Harvey, 20, as the shooter, following a confession.

He’s now charged with attempted criminal homicide and unlawful gun possession. While talking with MNPD, they say he told them that he was not intending to shoot the girl.

At this point, police have not said what the fight was about, meanwhile, residents are left searching for answers to violence that they say affects them daily.

“We can make this change if all of us take a step of making it better,” Wright added. Everybody can talk about it, but what we doing about it?”

Harvey is currently being held on a $125,000 bond.
