NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Even if it doesn’t feel like it, fall begins this weekend.

Autumn (fall) begins on September 22, 2024, at 7:43 A.M. In Middle Tennessee, this doesn’t mean it will feel like fall instantly, but temperatures will cool in the months to come.

Seasons are caused by the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis by 23.5°. During the autumnal equinox, the Earth’s axis is neither tilted toward or away from the sun resulting in nearly “equal” amounts of daylight and darkness at all latitudes.

The Autumnal Equinox will occur on Sunday, September 22.

After the equinox, days will get shorter in the coming months. The reduction in daylight will result in temperatures becoming cooler and leaves starting to change color.

Between now and December 1, we will lose around 2.5 hours of daylight. We will keep losing daylight until the Winter Solstice on December 21. After that, we will ever so slowly start gaining daylight again.
