9th heat wave of 2024 expected this weekend in the Midstate
We’re heading into fall, but it will feel like summer for a while longer.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The first day of fall is Sunday, but the summer heat is sticking around a while longer.
Middle Tennessee is heading into its ninth heat wave of 2024 this weekend. Temperatures are expected to reach 90º or higher for the next five days.
The autumnal equinox-- also known as the first day of fall-- is Sunday at 7:43 A.M. On that day, the high temperature is forecasted to reach 92º.
So far this year, Nashville has experienced eight heat waves. A “heat wave” is categorized as three days or more with temperatures at or above 90º. In total, Nashville has hit 90º or higher 66 times this year. While that is a lot, it’s not quite a record. The most 90º+ days Nashville has ever had was back in 2019, when we hit 90º or higher for 99 days that year.
Typically, we see an average of 49 days at or above 90º. The least we have ever seen was 11 in 1889.
