NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Social Services (MSS) will be delivering meal kits ahead of wintry weather. The kit lasts a person five days if conditions make it dangerous to get them.

It’s a plan that MSS always has ready to go, but they don’t use it unless the weather calls for it.

“This is a dangerous time for a lot of our clients and for those who are vulnerable in this area,” MSS Communications Director Harriet Wallace said.

Metro Social Services' severe weather response is made up of four components of their already existing department.

One of those components is their meal delivery system through their nutrition program. Anytime severe weather is on the cards, they deliver each of their clients with an emergency meal kit.

“If the roads are blocked and they can’t get any food, we want to make sure they have extra food to hold them over until we can get back to them,” Wallace said. “The help that we provide is literally lifesaving for many of our clients. Without us, there would be days they wouldn’t be able to get.”

The department serves over 800 people a month with its nutrition program, which makes deliveries every single week to those in need.

In addition to the emergency meal kits, the department increases the number of times they call and check in with their clients. This ensures their seniors are being checked in on and looked after during the weather events.

“Hard things happen to good people a lot of times, and we’re going to make sure you’re cared for and you’re safe,” Wallace said. “It doesn’t matter if it snows, it’s thundering or it’s a tornado, we’re going to show up.”
