NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A rare sunset was spotted in parts of Middle Tennessee on Thursday.

Viewers in Lebanon, Coopertown and Pleasant View shared photos of what looks like a vertical light in the sky at sunset.

According to WSMV4 Meteorologist Melanie Layden, the vertical light or “beam” in the sky is a sun pillar.

A sun pillar, according to Layden, is a vertical shaft of light that is reflected off of ice crystals in the atmosphere.

“They’re not super common in Tennessee, but usually spotted at sunrise or sunset,” Layden said.
