NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The WSMV4 Surprise Squad was on a mission to bless unsuspecting shoppers at a Middle Tennessee Kroger.

“Excuse me, ladies, ma’am,” said WSMV4’s Holly Thompson, walking down the frozen food aisle. “I’m Holly Thompson with the WSMV4 Surprise Squad along with Blair Durham, and we have one question to ask.” “Can we buy y’all’s groceries?” asked Surprise Squad sponsor Blair Durham of Bart Durham Injury Law. “Yes!” shouted Nashville native Trachel Stevenson. “It’s a lot!”

The mom of four was excited to stock up her grocery cart with longtime friend, mom Brittany Harris. Stevenson told Thompson and Durham that she was trying to hold back tears. “Just had a baby, just lost my job,” said Stevenson. “I’m in recovery, so I feel like everything that happens is like a gift for doing what I’m doing.”

Now in recovery for 19 months, Stevenson said she’s starting over again and right now, trying to feed her babies. The WSMV4 Surprise Squad helped Stevenson and Harris fill several carts with everything from chicken breasts and loaves of bread to frozen vegetables, dozens of eggs and boxes of diapers.

The grocery bill totaled - $683, which the Surprise Squad sponsor was happy to pay. “Thank you, thank you!” said Stevenson, hugging Durham. “You’re welcome,” replied Durham. “So glad to do it!”

The surprises kept coming, among them - a special gift for a retired man living in the Bordeaux area. “Can we bless you with buying your groceries?” asked Durham. “Are you for real?” asked Terry Farris. “For real!” exclaimed Thompson. “Maybe we can buy next month’s groceries. Here’s $600 in Kroger gift cards,” said Durham. “Thank you, Lord. I am so thankful,” responded Farris.

Thompson asked Durham what it meant to be able to give back to the Middle Tennessee community in this way. “The woman that’s in recovery and got her four kids back, I was on the board of CASA which is Court Appointed Special Advocates, and that’s their mission - is to get families reunited in a healthy way. So, that surprise was for me. That was awesome,” said Durham. “Just giving, you always get. It’s so great, so amazing!”

The Surprise Squad will be out and about each month, so be on the lookout and feel free to nominate that extra special someone who goes above and beyond on our WSMV4 app.
