Nephew gifts aunt lottery ticket – and she wins $1 million

ASHBURN, Va. (Gray News) - After a nephew gifted his aunt a lottery ticket that turned out to be worth $1 million, the two decided to split the prize.

Miran Smith gifted his aunt, Geraldine Smith, a Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle ticket. It turned out to be one of the grand prize winners worth $1 million, according to the Virginia Lottery.

After the winning numbers were announced Jan. 1, the nephew called his aunt and asked her to check the ticket number. When she did so, he said, “You’re a millionaire!” and she replied, “For real?”

The ticket was one of five raffle tickets Miran Smith bought at a Sunoco location in Ashburn. He and his aunt have decided to split the $1 million prize, each taking half.

Four other million-dollar tickets were sold in the state.
