Justice Department prepares to release part of special counsel report
Jack Smith pursued 2 investigations of Donald Trump
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The Biden Justice Department intends to release the special counsel report on Donald Trump’s election interference case.
However, a legal battle is heating up between the Attorney General and President-elect Donald Trump. The issue concerns whether or not the public will soon get to see the Special Counsel’s report about election interference charges against Trump.
In a legal filing Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said he intends to soon release special counsel Jack Smith’s report about election interference charges against President-elect Trump before Trump takes office. That’s despite the fact that the DOJ dismissed those charges at Smith’s request last year.
The release of that report the DOJ said was “in furtherance of the public interest.’
Trump’s lawyers are trying to block the release of the report – arguing that that Smith’s report would – in their words - “perpetuate false and discredited accusations.”
Special Counsel Jack Smith investigated two cases. The first was whether Donald Trump interfered in the final vote count for the Electoral College on January 6, 2021. The second was the discovery of classified documents at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate, in violation of the Presidential Records Act.
The DOJ has already decided not to release Smith’s report regarding Trump’s classified documents charges. That is the separate case out of Florida. Ultimately, the decision about releasing Smith’s report about election interference charges against Trump will be up to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
