WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Despite freezing temperatures in the nation’s capital, thousands have lined up to pay their respects.

The 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter is lying in state inside the Capitol rotunda. The line of visitors stretches about five city blocks. Tens of thousands of people will make their way through the Capitol to remember the man who one person says is known for the content of his character. Steve Alban served in the U.S. military.

“This was a very, very significant president or represents the best in our country. And I won’t say that from a partizan standpoint. I say that from the quality of the human being”

Nick Johnson traveled all the way from Minnesota, remembering his altruism.

“The images of him after his fall, when he’s still going out and working on Habitat for Humanity, I wish we had more leadership like that in this country.”

Matthew Simple worked on Carter’s campaign in 1980.

“No matter what the policy was or whatever the situation was. He always put his country ahead of himself.”

Fellow Georgian Diana Wilson was moved to tears seeing all those who loved Carter.

“God, just compassionate and compassionate. He was a humanitarian. He was a true servant.”

The U.S. Capitol will remain open to mourners until early Thursday morning. The state funeral for Jimmy Carter is scheduled for 10 am ET Thursday, January 9, 2025.
