80-year-old woman dies after motorized scooter catches fire outside care center, police say

ELY, Minn. (KBJR/Gray News) - An 80-year-old woman died after her motorized scooter caught fire outside a care center in Minnesota.

According to police in Ely, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday outside Boundary Waters Care Center.

Police said a witness saw the woman become engulfed in flames before staff members could get her off the scooter.

The 80-year-old suffered severe burns and was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a Duluth hospital.

She eventually died from her injuries.

Officials have not released her name.

A staff member who helped the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released from a hospital.

The State Fire Marshall is investigating.
