High school student killed in motorcycle crash after driver tries to escape deputies at 90 mph
LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB/Gray News) - A high school student in Georgia has died, and a 19-year-old was arrested after taking off from deputies on a motorcycle.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, on Jan. 1 just after 1 a.m., a deputy spotted a motorcycle traveling at an unsafe speed in the 1700 block of Philema Road. The deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver sped up.
A pursuit began that reached speeds of more than 90 mph.
The motorcycle ended up crashing into a trash can in the 800 block of Forrester Parkway around 1:20 a.m.
Both the driver and the passenger were flung off the bike.
The driver, later identified as 19-year-old Michael Evans, suffered minor injuries and was arrested shortly after receiving medical treatment.
The passenger was identified as 18-year-old Makenzie Jackson. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but died a few hours later.
Authorities said the two were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
According to the sheriff’s office, Evans was booked into the Lee County Jail and he is facing charges that include vehicular homicide and DUI.
Georgia State Patrol and Lee County Sheriff’s Office are investigating this incident.
