NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky is offering tips on how to find trustworthy plumbers ahead of the impending winter weather.

“When temperatures plummet, we often see an uptick in reports of scams and unlicensed contractors taking advantage of emergency situations,” said Robyn Householder, President and CEO. “We recommend hiring a trustworthy plumber who is BBB Accredited and has a proven track record of reliability and quality service.”

Middle Tennessee is expected to get 3″ of snow and 5-7″ in the more southern parts of the Midstate.

The BBB is reminding home and business owners to take precautions against freezing pipes, which can burst and cause significant water damage.

To protect your pipes from freezing, exposed pipes should be insulated, faucets should be left dripping, and residents should keep their homes warm inside.

However, should your pipes burst, the BBB also wants people to be able to find a license and BBB-accredited plumber.

Tips for Finding a Trustworthy Plumber:

  • Check Accreditation: Look for BBB Accredited plumbers by visiting BBB.org
  • Read Reviews: Review customer feedback on BBB.org to gauge reliability and performance.
  • Verify Licensing: BBB verifies licensing before a business is Accredited. If working with a non-accredited business, we suggest you do some additional research.
  • Get Estimates: Obtain multiple quotes to compare prices and services, and always request a written estimate before work begins.
  • Watch for Red Flags: Avoid contractors who demand large upfront payments or refuse to provide a written contract.

You can find a list of accredited plumbers on the BBB’s website.
