NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Several crashes were reported on Interstate 65 on Monday night in Franklin.

One crash shut down an entire exit for a few hours after eight vehicles crashed.

In response to the crashes, the Franklin Police Department has given drivers in Middle Tennessee a few tips on driving in winter weather.

  • Slow down: The Franklin Police Department said the faster you go, the harder it is to control or stop your vehicle on slick or snow-covered surfaces.
  • Don’t tailgate: Officials are urging drivers to keep your distance enough so that you have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you.
  • Inspect your ties: Police said as the temperature drops outside, so does tire inflation pressure. Officials are urging drivers to make sure each tire is filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Police said do not inflate your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself.
  • Plan your trip: Before heading out, police are urging drivers to plan ahead by checking to local weather and traffic reports. Officials recommend leaving early and familiarizing yourself with directions and maps before leaving.
  • Stock your vehicle: Carry items in your car to handle common winter driving related tasks including but not limited to:
    • A shovel
    • A broom
    • An ice scraper
    • Sand or kitty litter – in case your car gets stuck in snow
    • Jumper cables
    • Flashlight
    • Warning devices like flares or emergency markers
    • First aid kit, including a tourniquet
    • Blankets for protection from the cold
    • A cell phone and charger
    • Water
    • Food
    • Any necessary medicine
