NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The national spotlight was on Tennessee State University Friday after ESPN hosted its flagship morning sports show, “First Take,” on campus.

Hundreds filled an outdoor space to watch sports personality Stephen A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Cam Newton debate the hottest sports topics.

“First Take” is viewed by millions worldwide, which many in attendance believe is good exposure for the university.

“It’s nothing like a national spotlight for Tennessee State University, one of the major HBCUs in the nation,“ Alumni Debora Lanier-Benberry said. “I am proud; I am so glad that I went to TSU.”

The show coming campus is part of a larger initiative by them to highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country.

“A lot of people don’t understand the culture and how special it is for the people that go to school at an HBCU and what it means to them," “First Take” guest host Cristina Alexander said.

Over the course of two hours, Smith and the former NFL superstars discussed the importance of HBCUs along with the traditions.

It’s conversations that many audience members hope resonates with those who tuned in from across the country.

“If they’re watching this on TV, they’re looking like, ‘Wow, everybody’s excited, look at that energy, look at that community, I see people that look like me, I can go there and fit in here, I feel welcome,‘" Alumni Scott Richardson said.
