There have been 11 hurricanes this season in the Atlantic basin, with Hurricane Rafael being the latest to join this list. While this isn’t necessarily a record, only 8 other years since 1851 have had 11 or more hurricanes in a season in the Atlantic basin.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), an average hurricane season has 7 hurricanes. Aside from 2024 being an above-average hurricane season, we’ve seen some alarming things.

Sea surface temperatures have been at an all-time high and we’ve even had one of the strongest hurricanes on record this year; that was hurricane Milton with the 5th lowest pressure on record in the Atlantic basin.

Aside from the 11 hurricanes this season, there have been six additional storms that did not become hurricanes but did get a name. That means so far, we’ve had 17 named storms this hurricane season.

The Atlantic hurricane season will last through November 30. Although tropical activity quiets down this time of the year, Rafael is a good example of why you don’t let your guard down until the season is over.
