Inmate who gave birth on toilet inside cell sues Montgomery County Jail’s medical provider

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Alyssia Moulton, the Kentucky woman who gave birth on a toilet in her cell in the Montgomery County Jail, has sued the jail’s medical provider, citing indifference to her suffering.
The lawsuit against Southern Health Partners, Inc. was filed on Tuesday, nearly a year after Moulton gave birth on August 27, 2023.
Moulton claims in the lawsuit that she gave birth alone on the toilet in her cell, despite telling nurses she should go to the hospital.
Moulton also claims that her son, identified as A.M. in the lawsuit, was born with both a blood and eye infection because of his exposure to the toilet.
According to the lawsuit, Moulton didn’t know she was pregnant when she was jailed on a burglary charge on August 19, 2023.
Moulton said she only learned of her pregnancy following a medical examination with Southern Health Partners employees.
Moulton admitted that she was using illegal drugs at the time of her incarceration and began to suffer from detoxing.
While a medical note from a nurse claims Moulton refused medication to aid during detoxication, Moulton claims she was never offered any treatment.
Moulton claims in the suit that she was never given an ultrasound or given prenatal vitamins, despite the health provider knowing she was pregnant.
The suit claims that when Moulton believed she was having contractions and said she should probably be taken to the hospital, nurses said they could not feel contractions in her stomach.
Moulton said she was put in solitary medication confinement, so when she gave birth, she was alone on the toilet.
Moulton is seeking compensatory damages.
