Former Chattanooga police chief facing criminal charges
TBI agents said Celeste Murphy knowingly entered false information on several government documents.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WSMV) – A former Chattanooga Police Department chief who resigned this week is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after a probe by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Celeste Murphy, 56, was indicted by a Hamilton County Grand Jury on Tuesday, charging her with one count of illegal voter registration, one count of false entries on official registration or election documents, three counts of false entries in governmental records, three counts of forgery, three counts of perjury, and six counts of official misconduct.
Murphy resigned Wednesday from her position as Chattanooga’s police chief and was indicted while still on the job.
During TBI’s investigation, agents determined Murphy knowingly entered false information on several government documents related to establishing residency in Chattanooga by swearing to their truth by signing the documents, investigators said.
On Thursday, Murphy turned herself into agents at the Hamilton County Jail, where authorities booked her and subsequently released her after Murphy posted a $19,000 bond.
