MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A woman who was critically injured in a “freak accident” in the parking lot of a Murfreesboro steakhouse has died, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department.

MPD reports that the woman who was injured in the parking lot of a Longhorn Steakhouse on Dec. 23, later died on Dec. 28 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

She’s been identified as 61-year-old Cathy Pendergrass of Virginia.

“The accident remains under investigation by the FACT (Fatal Accident Crash Team),” MPD said.

MPD said that a woman in the driver seat of the CRV was backing out of a parking space to allow a man in a wheelchair to get into the passenger seat. The man in the wheelchair was being helped into the CRV by another woman because he had recently suffered a stroke and had no feeling in his left side.

As the man was getting into the passenger seat, he accidently hit the gas pedal. This caused the vehicle to reverse, spin “out of control,” and hit another vehicle. The woman helping the man into the CRV was then pinned between the two vehicles.

Police said the “out of control vehicle” continued reversing and crashed into two more cars before stopping.
