MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WSMV) - Some Wilson County parents said any additions made to schools to protect children is vital.

One mom told WSMV4, “You want to know that your children are secure. We can’t be with them 24/7, so to know that there are extra precautions taken for their protection, it’s definitely a good thing.”

She’s talking about new fences that went up at a few Wilson County schools within the last month.

Bart Barker with Wilson County Schools said, “Keeping people off our property who aren’t supposed to be there is largely the reasoning for the fencing, but just all-around safety and security for our students, our teachers, everyone involved.”

The fencing at Mt. Juliet Middle School was installed within the last month. Some of the newer schools in the district already have the fencing.

“What we don’t want is people coming on our grounds that again not supposed to be here and has ill intentions to harm our property or again harm someone on our property at any point of the day,” said Barker.

The fencing is in addition to other security measures the school district approved. That includes two new weapon detection K-9s and security film that will eventually go on all school windows.

Barker added, “Our employees and our students are the most important things that we have, and we want to do whatever we can to protect everyone on our property.”

For parents, they said anything to bolster safety is a plus.

“Any added protection a fence would definitely keep predators and people who mean harm it’s a deterrent, and so it would deter them,” a parent said.
