NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Over the past few years, the Volunteer State has been talked about as one of the states it seems people are moving to the most in the U.S.

Those trending conversations may continue as U-Haul releases its top-growing states of 2024.

“The trend of southern states netting larger numbers of one-way U-Haul customers continued during 2024, with South Carolina topping the U-Haul Growth Index for the first time,” the moving and storage giant shared. “Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee round out the five leading growth states.”

Tennessee ranked No. 5 on the list when it comes to customers utilizing one-way U-Haul equipment in a calendar year. South Carolina took the top spot, followed by Texas, North Carolina, and Florida.

“State-to-state transactions from the past year reaffirm customer tendencies that have been pronounced for some time,” JohnTaylor, U-Haul International’s president said. “Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state. Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast — and particularly California.

According to U-Haul, not only did the State of Tennessee wind up in the top 10, but Metro Nashville also ranked among the top metros for growth.

Nashville ranked at No. 6 on the list behind Dallas (1), Charlotte (2), Phoenix (3), Lakeland (4) and Austin (5).
