NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Vanderbilt student was robbed near campus on Saturday morning. Police arrested 42-year-old Marquis Douglas in connection to the incident.

The Vanderbilt student told police, that Douglas approached her from behind, put a gun to her back, and said, ‘Drop everything you have and give me your purse.’ The student told police she gave Douglas $70 and ran away.

This happened near 32nd Ave. and Orleans Dr.

Martin Donovan says he’s in that area a lot.

”This is the neighborhood my car was broken into,” Donovan said.

He said he learned the hard way that everything isn’t always as it seems.

“It looks like a nice neighborhood but there is theft here,” Donovan said.

Donovan says that’s why he’s not shocked to learn about Saturday’s incident.

While the incident did not happen on Vanderbilt’s campus, they said in a statement:

”We are deeply committed to ensuring the safety of our community members. We strongly encourage Vanderbilt community members to download the Vandysafe app.”

Police said they tracked Douglas down after he allegedly tried to rob an 89-year-old woman later Saturday morning on Park Ave. Police said that’s when they noticed Douglas walking in a nearby park. Through surveillance video, they connected Douglas to the first incident near Vanderbilt, police said.

Donovan says don’t be fooled just because an area looks nice.

”You need to watch your back don’t be alone at night, carry maze, pepper spray,” Donovan said.
