NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A man brazenly stole two ferns from the front porch of a home in East Nashville, and the homeowner reported it to police.

Footage from Debra Geiger’s Ring doorbell camera shows a man walking up to their porch around 5:30 a.m., reaching up and taking down both of their hanging ferns. The video then shows him hurrying away with the plants.

“You know, what’s the point? I mean, go buy your own ferns,” Debra Geiger said. “It is so silly. It is so silly.”

As minor as stealing plants might seem, Debra said it is unsettling, especially considering they’ve lived there for 13 years and never had anything stolen from their porch before now.

“It may seem like such a petty theft, such a petty thing. But really, it’s so brazen because he had to walk quite a few feet from the road to get to the porch,” Geiger said.

Plus, this year, Debra said the Geigers decided to spend a little more on the ferns -- $50 a plant.

“We thought this year we’ll go a little more pricey so we don’t have to repot them, and you don’t have to water them as often,” she said.

Plus, she worries about what this could lead to if unchecked.

“If they are as brazen to come up and steal your, you know, your flowers, what are they going to steal next?” Geiger said.

The Geigers decided to file a police report. Metro Police told her that crime is not common in the Holly Street area and that there were no other reports of theft on that street. Debra noted that her neighbor’s ferns were untouched.

“We have no idea. I mean, he wasn’t recognizable to anybody around here,” she said, leaving her wondering about the ultimate fate of her ferns.

“It would be great if somebody recognized him. You know, bring my ferns back. If you’ve got them hanging on your porch, bring them back to my porch,” she said with a laugh.
