Parents send cash straight to daycare workers after routinely late paychecks
The trouble surrounding Franklin Springs Academy includes workers striking over late payroll, the owner being indicted on federal charges and the owner’s husband charged with rape involving someone under the age of 18.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Parents of a troubled Middle Tennessee daycare are now sending Venmo payments straight to the director of Franklin Springs Academy after they say the owner failed to pay employees on time.
Employees of the Franklin child care center report routinely late paychecks and even went on strike for one day because of payroll issues.
Jenny Montani has two children who attend Franklin Springs Academy. She said the PTO is asking families to cancel their auto payments so that tuition funds don’t go to owner Rebekah Proctor. Instead, the PTO is asking families to Venmo the daycare director to ensure employees are paid.
More than ten families are currently sending cash to prevent late payroll, Montani said.
Montani said she spoke with Proctor about late payroll and that Proctor said she was waiting on checks to clear for leased furniture and electricity.
Former employees of the now-closed Chapel Hill location accused owner Rebekah Proctor of late payroll and issuing paychecks that later bounced.
A WSMV 4 investigation uncovered the owner is accused of using Paycheck Protection Program money that was meant for the daycare for her own personal expenses, and for the personal expenses of her husband. Proctor has been indicted on 20 federal charges.
The indictment alleges that Proctor failed to “account for and pay over the trust fund taxes due and owing to the IRS on behalf of the employees of Franklin Springs Academy.”
Employees said the daycare experienced a drop in enrollment after the owner’s husband, Corey Proctor, was arrested on charges of incest and rape. The District Attorney’s office said the charges involve someone older than 13 but younger than 18. At the time, owner Rebekah Proctor told WSMV4′s Amanda Hara that kids at her daycares were not in danger and that when her husband was released from jail, he would not be allowed near either facility.
However, Hall said Corey Proctor came to the Franklin location after his release and parked in the parking lot.
