COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Police were forced to shut down a major road in Cookeville this morning after a water main break left the road seriously damaged and unusable.

The Cookeville Police Department closed East Spring Street in both directions, from Watagua Road to Whitson Chapel Road due to a “significant sinkhole” left in the road after a water main ruptured around 7 a.m.

The break affected nearby residences and businesses as the lines were shut down for repairs, which is expected to last until approximately 2 p.m.

City crews are working to repair the broken water main and damaged road.

Commuters are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
