NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Ashland City Fire Department warned parents not to strap children into car seats with coats on.

The department said the harness can appear tight with a coat on, but once the coat is removed, a huge gap is left between the child and the harness.

That gap could be dangerous if the coat compressed during a crash, the post warned.

The department said parents can instead pre-heat the car, use blankets, layer children in thin clothing or put the coat on backwards over the harness to keep kids warm in their car seats during cold weather.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says bulky coats create extra room in the car seat harness that can put children at risk of injury during a crash.

Lightweight fleece layers are recommended instead by NHTSA.
