Friend revealed he ‘killed Austin’ after body found on I-40, report says
The friend of a man who had been hit by multiple cars and killed on I-40 is now charged with vehicular homicide.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A man is facing charges after the body of 22-year-old Austin David was found along I-40 East near mile marker 218 in Nashville on December 3.
David was hit by multiple cars and killed that night, and his friend, 23-year-old Logan Garver, is accused of vehicular homicide in the case.
An arrest affidavit states Garver told witnesses he “f***** up and killed Austin” after a night out at a club.
Garver is accused of driving drunk after leaving a strip club with David and then crashing into a guardrail causing David to be ejected. David was later hit by two other cars, according to the affidavit.
Several witnesses told police that Garver made statements to them about what happened on the interstate on the night of December 3. One woman said Garver told her he had been drinking before the crash and did not notice David was not in the vehicle until he realized he had a flat tire.
Garver is accused of telling a different witness that he saw a body on the interstate when he went back to look for David.
That same witness told police Garver revealed he had at least four drinks at a club before falling asleep while driving home
“I was so f****d up I didn’t remember leaving the club,” Garver is accused of telling another witness. In that same conversation, he revealed he blacked out and woke up after crashing his truck, according to a police affidavit.
A man told officers Garver reached out to him to see if he thought David could have fallen out of the damaged truck after the crash and said, ‘I f****d up and killed Austin,” according to the report.
The arrest warrant states video surveillance from Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club shows Austin David and Logan Garver walking into the business with a bottle of tequila and then later stumbling out of the business before getting into Garver’s truck.
Detectives reported finding Garver’s truck with heavy damage to the passenger’s side indicating David was ejected from the vehicle. The truck’s damage matched a guardrail impact at the crash scene, according to the report.
Police said Garver initially told David’s mother that the two got in a fight and David got out of his truck on the interstate.
Selena Curtis said people who knew David are struggling to process what happened. Curtis and other friends are praying for justice.
“He wouldn’t want us to cry or anything, but it’s just something that none of us can handle,” Curtis said. “It’s something that none of us thought would happen in the long run. He’s someone we never thought we would lose, and it hurts bad.”
Curtis, Kimbrough, and other people WSMV4 spoke with said David was a big teddy bear and one of the most selfless people they’d ever met. His goal in life was to make people smile and laugh any time he walked into a room.
“He was just a caring and loving person who never wanted anybody hurt,” Curtis said. “I know he would want something said and something done about any type of situation that’s happened.”
Garver was booked into jail around 10 p.m. on Thursday, December 12. He faces eight charges including reckless endangerment/assault with a vehicle, reckless vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide due to intoxication, indecent exposure, tampering with evidence, failing to report a crash, failing to render aid, and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
His bond is set at $103,000.
