NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Beyond the headlines Savannah Guthrie reads every morning on NBC’s Today is a faith that’s grown since childhood.

“I’m not preaching at all actually,” said Guthrie at a sold-out book signing Saturday on the campus of Belmont University. “I’m just relating my faith in real life that’s not perfect and never was, and never will be.”

In her new book, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere, Guthrie shares about the Christian faith that grounds her.

“I think that’s where my strength is,” she added. “That’s my foundation. That’s what gives me the courage to go and face the world.”

The wife and mother of two said the most touching surprise about this book is the conversation it’s sparking.

“Your colleagues at work, the people that have reached out and said ‘I’m so glad you wrote this book’ and tell you about themselves, something that’s more personal -- it’s that point of connection. We’re just engaging on a deeper level, and I love that.”

Guthrie, who said she thrives on deadlines, credits a talented editor and team to finishing the book in just one year.

“I can’t get over what a lovely job they did,” she said. “It is exciting, it’s thrilling, it’s a little bit terrifying to be doing something different and so personal.”

Now she hopes the assurances she writes about take root in the hearts of readers.

“I know that God’s love for me has nothing to do with how good or bad I am, or how pious my practices are, or perfect my words. That it has everything to do with Him and who He is., and I find that to be a great source of relief and strength.”

Country music star Hillary Scott of Lady A, who interviewed Guthrie at the Belmont event sponsored by Parnassus Books, will join her for the official book launch Tuesday on Today.
