New Titans stadium still on schedule despite budget overages
The new Nissan Stadium is being built in the parking lot next to the current stadium.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Titans played Monday Night Football in Miami as construction crews worked to build the team’s new stadium just feet from the current Nissan Stadium.
The massive East Bank development project is based around the new indoor football stadium that was originally expected to cost $2.1 billion.
Just six months after the groundbreaking, the project is already more than $135 million dollars over budget, but project executive Kellen DeCoursey said they are still on track to open in early 2027.
“Those were strategic decisions and points where we felt were important to make this a building that would stand the test of time,” DeCoursey said about the changes. “For expansion and for added fan experience, there were reasons we felt these were important increases to add to the building design.”
The Titans are on the hook to cover any cost overages. DeCoursey said there are currently around 550 workers on site every day and that number will reach more than 1,000 in the final stages of construction.
Crews have already moved more than 400,000 cubic yards of dirt and drilled nearly 800 piers for support columns. The concrete superstructure of the stadium is being formed by crews working with the help of four cranes and the first walls of the field are starting to be visible to fans watching on the livestream.
DeCoursey has previously worked on the development of GEODIS Park in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood and the Wrigley Field renovations in Chicago. He said the new Nissan Stadium will be one of the most important stadium projects in the nation’s history because of the impact it will have on the community and economy.
“This one is monumental and obviously having the ability to have a roof on this building is a game changer for Nashville,” DeCoursey said. “We love Nissan Stadium today, it’s been a great home, but obviously this type of facility opens up new doors for what kind of events can come to Nashville.”
The Comfort Inn & Suites is directly across the street from the construction site. Assistant General Manager John Sasraku said their guests do not like the noise and dirt, but they are very excited about how the project will change the neighborhood.
Sasraku is hopeful the new stadium will allow them to host guests for a Super Bowl or even March Madness Final Four games. To get ready for the new neighbor, the hotel has renovated all of its rooms and touched up its famous guitar-shaped pool.
“I love to see how the neighborhood, the whole little mini city, is going to look like,” Sasraku said. “Very, very soon, I think it will be a great addition to Nashville.”
Sasraku said it has been really cool to watch the stadium slowly rise from the ground and he’s excited to see how it will change the Titan’s gameday experience.
