Nashville community activist featured in gun violence documentary
The film will be featured at the International Black Film Festival this month.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A provocative documentary featuring a local community activist will debut at the Green Hills Mall in Nashville later this month.
The film is called “The Tennessee 11.”
The creators of the film took 11 strangers from various walks of life and put them in a room to talk about gun violence.
One is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, while another is a Memphis teenager who lost multiple friends to gun violence.
Then there’s Nashville’s former director of safety, Ron Johnson.
Johnson said that even though they disagreed on many topics, after spending three days in a room together, they still managed to put their heads together to come up with some gun safety proposals for lawmakers.
“Even the person with the AR, or the person who doesn’t want anyone to have any guns at all, what they realize is, that they have more in common, and the thing that I find that they have in common is: no one wants violence in their community,” said Johnson. “That means we can all do something.”
The film will be shown as part of the Nashville Film Festival on September 21 at Regal Green Hills Theater 1, then again on September 24, at the Franklin Theatre.
Additionally, The Tenessee 11 will be featured at the International Black Film Festival on October 3, at the Scarritt Bennett Center.
